Growing up in Los Angeles, Sally Ride’s parents encouraged her interest in science by gifting her a telescope and a chemistry set. That early spark of curiosity motivated her to study physics, eventually leading her to respond to a student newspaper article announcing NASA's first recruitment of women into the astronaut corps. Out of more than 8,000 applicants, Sally was one of just six women accepted.
On June 18, 1983, she blasted off aboard the space shuttle Challenger, making history as the first American woman—and the youngest American—to fly in space. Her adventurous nature, quest for discovery, and pioneering accomplishments continue to inspire girls everywhere to boldly reach for the stars.
